Ingredients

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

1 large apple, peeled and diced (preferably Granny Smith for tartness)

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

1/3 cup brown sugar, packed

1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling on top)

Optional: ½ tsp cinnamon for a sweet touch

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well. In a separate bowl, combine melted butter and brown sugar until smooth. Stir in the grated cheddar cheese and diced apple.

Combine: Gradually mix the wet ingredient mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms. If using, fold in the cinnamon at this point for a hint of sweetness.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Form the Pretzel Bites: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll the dough into a long log, about 1 inch in diameter. Cut the log into bite-sized pieces (about 1 inch each).

Boil Water: In a large pot, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully drop in the pretzel bites in batches (about 5-6 at a time) and boil for 30 seconds. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Egg Wash: Brush the tops of each pretzel bite with the beaten egg for a golden finish. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and fluffy.

Cooling: Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce or enjoy them plain!
