Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef (or Italian sausage)

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 egg

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Sauté Aromatics: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.

Brown the Meat: Add the ground beef (or sausage) to the skillet. Break it up with a spoon and cook until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Season and Saucy: Stir in the Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Pour in the marinara sauce and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.

Mix Cheese Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well until smooth.

Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti, meat sauce, and half of the mozzarella cheese (1.5 cups). Stir until everything is evenly coated.

Assemble the Dish: In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half of the pasta mixture. Spread the ricotta mixture on top, then layer with the remaining pasta mixture. Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.
