Ingredients

400g spaghetti

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 medium carrot, diced

1 celery stalk, diced

500g ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)

100ml red wine (optional but recommended)

400g canned chopped tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)

Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

Cook the Spaghetti: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, diced carrot, and diced celery. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables soften and the onion becomes translucent.

Brown the Meat: Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef to the pan. Break it up with a spoon and cook until browned, about 5-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Deglaze with Wine: If using, pour in the red wine and scrape up any bits stuck to the bottom of the pan. Allow the wine to simmer for 2-3 minutes until reduced slightly.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Stir in the canned chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, dried oregano, and dried basil. Season with salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Simmer the Sauce: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully. If the sauce thickens too much, you can add a splash of water or broth.

Combine with Spaghetti: Once the sauce has thickened and developed flavor, add the cooked spaghetti directly to the sauce (or serve the sauce on top of the spaghetti, depending on your preference). Toss well to ensure the pasta is evenly coated.

Serve: Plate the spaghetti Bolognese onto serving dishes. Top with grated Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh basil leaves. Enjoy with a side of garlic bread or a green salad if desired!
