Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

1 cup buttermilk

1 large egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.

Incorporate Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cheese and Herbs: Gently fold in the shredded cheddar cheese, chopped chives, and parsley, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Combine with Buttermilk: Create a well in the center of the mixture, then pour in the buttermilk. Use a spatula to gently stir until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.

Shape the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it into a rectangle about 1 inch thick. Fold it over onto itself twice to create layers. Gently pat it down again to about 1 inch thick.

Cut Scones: Use a sharp knife or a round cutter to cut out scones from the dough, placing them on the prepared baking sheet, spaced about 2 inches apart.

Egg Wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the tops of the scones with the egg wash for a golden finish.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Cool and Serve: Remove the scones from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes on a wire rack. Serve warm, ideally with butter, or enjoy them plain.
